Pedro Roque, the veteran trainer of former world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa, believes his fighter could have performed much better back in December, when he suffered a stoppage loss at the hands of Gervonta Davis.

Gamboa suffered a foot injury early on in the fight. He underwent surgery to correct the injury early this year.

For now, Roque is content to see Gamboa's progress and is excited about the possibility of watching him fight before the end of 2020 in a division that he defines as super hot because of the concentration of talent.

"[Gamboa is looking] very good. The operation was very complicated, but the doctors were at a very high level. The fact that in just three months he's come back to the gym is proof of that. The rehab was also very good. He's already training as normal," Roque told George Ebro.

"He walks very well, settles very well. Gamboa also had some [bone] spurs and all of that was taken out. Gamboa's foot is a young man's foot. It's moving normally through the ring. I can tell you Gamboa will be around for a while.

The trainer feels confident that Gamboa could do better against Davis in a rematch.

"Of course I do. We started the fight cold in Atlanta. The strategy was to go cautiously to see what Davis was bringing, but in the second round came the injury and everything got complicated. In the seventh we had good times. In the eighth, ninth and tenth rounds we saw Davis was running out of steam, but Gamboa's foot was not responding," Roque said.

"There are countless people who have called me and ask me to do a rematch to see Gamboa in there with two healthy feet inside the ring, to see where Davis is going to go [in his career]. There is interest from PBC and I think Floyd Mayweather should have an interest.

"The division has gotten hot. I see Gamboa being in the mix. We're talking about a lot of young boys who are talented and hungry [at 135]. Davis, Devin Haney.. but Gamboa has also returned hungry, and also wounded because he knows he could have done more [with Davis]."
