At a time when the 2020 Tokyo Olympics were set to begin, instead comes the reminder of the year-long delay the Summer Games are forced to endure.
Participants have been given a full year’s notice as to when and where they will compete in Tokyo 2020, which will now begin July 21, 2021. The modified date comes nearly 52 full weeks after the original starting point of July 24, with the Olympics pushed back to next summer due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The schedules for all 47 sanctioned sports along with the Opening and Closing Ceremonies were announced, with boxing events taking place in 15 of the 18 days of competition. All bouts and boxing medal ceremonies will be staged at Kokugikan Arena, an 11,000+ seat venue in the Sumida section of Tokyo, Japan.
The first batch of Olympic bouts will take place July 24, 2021, the first of eight consecutive days of non-medal round competition. The first medal round bout will take place July 31, featuring both legs of the semifinals in the Women’s Featherweight division (57 kg.), one of two new weight classes added on the female boxing side of Olympic competition along with welterweight (69 kg.).
Boxing will feature competition in 13 total weight divisions—eight for the men and five for females, which previously featured three (flyweight, lightweight, middleweight) in London 2012 and Rio 2016. The selected divisions are as follows:
Men: Flyweight (52 kg.), Featherweight (57 kg.), Lightweight (63 kg.), Welterweight (69 kg.), Middleweight (75 kg.), Light Heavyweight (81 kg.), Heavyweight (91 kg.), Super Heavyweight (+91 kg.)
Women: Flyweight (51 kg.), Featherweight (57 kg.), Lightweight (60 kg.), Welterweight (69 kg.), Middleweight (75 kg.)
The bantamweight and light welterweight divisions have been eliminated from men’s competition.
Select fights from the round of 32, round of 16 and quarterfinals will air on an NBC platform, with all Medal bouts to make its way to a televised medium.
The first Gold medal bout will take place August 3 (Women’s Featherweight), with the last batch taking place on August 8, the final day of competition for the Olympics as a whole.

Uzbekistan served as the standout team from the 2016 Rio Olympics, collecting seven medals in total including three Gold medals. Among them was light flyweight representative Hasanboy Dusmatov, who claimed the Val Baker award as the Most Outstanding Boxer among male boxers.
Claressa Shields became the first-ever female boxer to claim the Val Baker trophy, in honor of her second consecutive Gold medal haul for the 2016 United States Olympic Boxing team. Shields—now a three-division champion in the pros—was one of three Americans to medal, joined by Shakur Stevenson (Silver) and Nico Hernandez (Bronze).
