Shortly after Floyd Mayweather Jr. defeated Marcos Maidana on Saturday evening at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, former champion Amir Khan met with a group of reporters at the post fight press conference. BOUCHERVILLE - InterBox and Lucian Bute (31-2-0 24 K.O.) are proud to announce that the Romania native will continue his career and his training under trainer of the year Freddie Roach and his team. A few weeks ago, while Lucian was visiting California, the famous trainer got to see him in action. Impressed by what he saw, and being confident in Bute's abilities, the alliance between Freddie Roach and the Laval resident naturally came to fruition. " - Lucian Bute
Freddie Roach, trainer of WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, sees nothing wrong with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs) potentially facing former champion Joshua Clottey (38-4, 22KOs) in the fall. Team Canelo confirmed last week that Clottey was the leading candidate to face Canelo in the fall. A mega-match between Cotto and Canelo is likely for the first half of 2015. Cotto was initially scheduled to fight on December 13th, but took a pass on the match because Roach will be unavailable for the majority of his training camp. Roach will be in the Philippines training Manny Pacquiao for his November 22 defense against Chris Algieri.
Trainer Freddie Roach would love to see Manny Pacquiao face current WBC/WBA junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia (29-0, 17KOs) - if Pacquiao defeats Chris Algieri on November 22nd in Macau, China. Garcia is pondering the possibility of heading to welterweight for his next fight. He has a mandatory due to WBC contender Viktor Postol. Roach doesn't care about the weight. He would have Pacquiao, the current WBO welterweight champion, face him at 140 or 147.
Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach continues to claim that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a shot fighter who no longer has the ability to use movement for twelve full rounds. According to Roach, Mayweather's lack of movement is the reason for his refusal to face Manny Pacquiao in a welterweight unification. Mayweather returns next Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas against Marcos Maidana, and Pacquiao fights Chris Algieri on November 22 in Macau.
After scoring a surprising victory over former Middleweight kingpin Sergio Martinez, many wondered how Miguel Cotto would follow up his history making win which made him the first Puerto Rican fighter to win titles in four different weight classes. Top Rank had informed Cotto would return before the end of the year on a December 13th date with an opponent yet to be determined. BoxingScene however was advised by Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach that Cotto had chosen to pass up on the December date and would not be fighting again in 2014.

Freddie Roach, trainer of WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs), says Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs) is a "very makeable fight." Both fighters are scheduled to see action in the fall against unknown opponents. Canelo will either return at the end of November or a date in December. Cotto is penciled in for a date of December 13th at New York's Madison Square Garden. If both fighters are successful, their respective camps will likely begin negotiations for a May showdown.
While Freddie Roach gives Marcos Maidana absolutely no shot to defeat WBC/WBA welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0, 26KOs) on September 13th, the veteran trainer does believe Amir Khan (29-3, 19KOs) - at least stylistically - is a real threat to Mayweather's undefeated record. If Mayweather overcomes Maidana, Khan is a likely candidate for Floyd's next fight. Roach was the head trainer of Khan for several years. They parted ways in 2012, and then Khan hired Virgil Hunter.
