Frank Warren Confident That Flanagan Tops Hooker For Title

By Frank Warren, courtesy of The Daily Star

TERRY FLANAGAN has been plaguing me for years, constantly asking to fight the very best, even when he wasn’t quite ready.

His mentality means that he has always been asking for the tough fights no matter what. He’s always been like that.

I used to have the same thing happen with Naseem Hamed who, like Flanagan, would get frustrated when possible big name fights could not be made.

But, like Naz, Terry would always grit his teeth and battle on and now there is absolutely no doubt that the WBO world lightweight champion is right at the very top in his sport.

Now those big name bouts are coming thick and fast for the Manchester fighter.

Since lifting the lightweight belt by defeating Jose Zepeda in July 2015, he has made five successful defences.

And he is hoping to add the vacant WBO light-welterweight strap to his CV when he meets Maurice Hooker at the Manchester Arena next Saturday.

Flanagan is aiming to become a two-weight world champion and that would be just reward for a guy who never gives up.

Unlike many world champions, he didn’t come up through the Olympic route where amateurs enjoy the benefits of the funding system.

He came up the hard way after joining the Ancoats Lads Club, learning the ropes in around 60 amateur bouts before turning pro at 19.

When he is on form, I feel Terry is certainly one of the best fighters out there who always gives 100 percent.

He currently holds the longest undefeated record of any active British fighter with an unbeaten run of 33 victories.

Now he faces American Hooker, a rangy six-footer who comes over here as a really tough opponent for my man.

I know it will be tough but I honestly feel that Flanagan has the hunger and the armoury needed to do the job and get that second world title.

What happened to Hamed & Hatton can happen to Flanagan if he is not careful and wise enough.
