Tunney was a modern boxer. Too bad most of the film is of him, or all of it, is fighting Dempsey, where he had to be extra cautious. Tunney definitely had tools and is generally underrated. The marine was a rock hard man. Take the time to look at some photos when he is flexed.
I feel Tunney would have a decent chance of of slipping George's haymakers until burger George started to tire, just as he did against Ali.
(Yeah, sure. They going to fight in the African heat, too?).
George had slow feet, even as a prime muscle elephant. Liston had much quicker feet. He was almost fast enough to run prime Clay down. George would barely have touched the Ali who destroyed Williams with such artistry.
Tunney and Ali had the style to beat George. Ali did it. I am not saying Tunney would also, I am saying I think he has a decent chance to last until George is helpless, and then have his way. Tunney was not feather fisted, and he would have fought George as carefully as he did Dempsey. I think he would find the early-round charging of George easy slippings, and might frustrate and anger him to the point that he tires even faster.
Two heavyweight champs stand alone for foot speed and they are about equal. Gene was arguably the most complete fighter of his age. He had the boxing skill of Mike Gibbons but a hurtful punch to go with it.
