Weaknesses in prime Tyson.

Mike Tyson to some of us was the perfect physical package for a certain type of heavyweight...Ike Iebuchi was another one with the physical gifts of a certain kind of fighter. To many a heavyweight should top off at about 220 to 40 at most!

The power comes from explosiveness. Dempsey developed that gift, the ability to attack suddenly and as though the body was exploding into the punches. A pure puncher, someone like Louis for example, needs 15 rounds to make sure traps, range and other such things guarantee that the opponent will have to deal with the punch...but explosive guys, like Dempsey and Tyson, could do it in a heartbeat. Fast feet and hands make the package complete.

When we look at a specimen, we can see where the evolution went South a bit: David Tua... slow feet and a lack of craft for example. But with Tyson? Every check off the proverbial list was there. The proof was in how fast Tyson went through coming up... But also, the total lack of resistance encountered.

Morrison,is another example... He was a pure puncher that had many looking at the days when Louis ruled the roost... with his power, grace, and ability to walk through the competition coming up.

But in both cases we are dealing with the complexity of human agency. Life happens as they say. Morrison like Tyson became their own worse enemy. But in both men one can see as they climb the ladder, the skill and focus. Then one can see that focus dissapear and all the king's horses and all the king's men could not put it back together again.

Yeah to an average person he is a monster, but we are doing a comparison to other champions - and compared to them he isn't that great.

He got busted up by anyone good.

His prime was only 2 years and people call it his prime because thats the streak he went on, how the hell did he lose to Douglas at 24 years of age and never avenge it? Holyfield took that guy apart in 3 rounds.

His 2 best wins are Spinks and Holmes, both who were retired and brought back on short notice for a big pay day with no tune up. They have a 1% chance at winning considering the circumstances.

he fought tomato Cans, and yes Joe Louis get's a ot of heat for this as well, but he avenged his loss during this time and even those guys he fought at least came to take his title. Tyson opponents fell down before he even hit them (Remember Bruce Seldon?) lol

I will say Tyson was still a good heavyweight, def not the worst - but he loses to all the top HW's for sure.

ALSO -

The big problem is uneducated people that never boxed put explosiveness and his combinations way to high on the list when it comes to skills. Yes the man was explsive, but having a good ring IQ can deal with this. Tyson couldn't work inside - he would just hold on. Any smart fighter would capitalize on this. 2, he loads up all the time, a smart fighter would sucker him in and make him miss. 3, a tough fighter with balls could take his shot - this happened in his prime as well.

Take Tyson vs Foreman, I really don't see Tyson putting Foreman down let alone stopping him, that man was as strong as they come and tough as nails. A lot stronger than the guys that went 12 with Tyson. Better yet he would actually fight back and could hurt anybody. Even a guy like Joe Frazier, working inside the way he did and the fact that he got up 6 times after being put down, shows how much of a man and how difficult he would be for Tyson (he would stop Tyson or Decision him) yet most uneducated boxing fans really only see the highlight reel type of ****.
