WASHINGTON — Sen. Elizabeth Warren admitted to shopping at online retail giant Amazon Monday — even though she wants the online retail giant broken up, because she says it’s crushing small businesses.
During a CNN town hall for Democratic presidential hopefuls Monday, Warren said breaking up Amazon would create “a lot more competition where little businesses have a chance to get going.”
But when questioned, she admitted that doesn’t stop her from shopping at the retail monolith.
Anderson Cooper asked the Massachusetts senator to name the last thing she bought.
“A mailbox,” she answered, eliciting laughs from the Manchester, New Hampshire, audience.
“What did they put the mailbox in when they deliver it?” Cooper mused.
“It comes in a box,” Warren said. “It was a box of mailbox.”
Warren had just finished explaining why she wanted to see Amazon’s businesses split up, explaining that Amazon has the habit of crushing the little guy, because it’s both a platform and a seller.
“You can have a team in the game, but you don’t get to be the umpire and have a team in the game,” she explained. “If we break off the platform from the parts that are competing, what you’ll see in America is a platform that works really well — it’s a very profitable business — but you’ll see a lot more competition where little businesses have a chance to get going.”
