Not too sure about John Arne Riise. ive never really be too keen on him. I know he can score goals, and thats always good from a defensive sort of player. im just not sure if he would fit in.

how much are liverpool looking to offload him for?
    £4M I think.

John Arne Riise would be an excellent buy. He is a free-kick specialist, has a thunderbolt shot, his pace and dibbling skills are some of the best and he is a defender! how many more player do you know as flexible as Riise?

    • Riise has had one bad season and Liverpool fan disown him? Riise has given 110% for 5 years and has been a key player, scoring countless sublime goals. Liverpool fans are a joke.

Newcastle are close to buying highly-rated Croatia midfielder Luka Modric in a £12 million deal with Dinamo Zagreb.

Dinamo vice-president Zdravko Mamic met Newcastle representatives at the city's Malmaison hotel this week for talks over the playmaker who will be a key member of Slaven Bilic's Croatia side at Euro 2008.

It is understood the deal has been spearheaded by Newcastle's director of football, Dennis Wise, and should Modric, 22, sign it would represent a significant coup as he has attracted the attention of Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal.

Mamic, who oversaw Eduardo da Silva's move to Arsenal, has informally confirmed that Modric is near to finalising a move to Newcastle, where manager Kevin Keegan is short of midfield creativity.

There were suggestions last night that Modric was already celebrating a money-spinning move, although it is doubtful that he would earn the £80,000 a week being paid to Dinamo old boy Mark Viduka.

Modric had also been linked with Barcelona, but his compatriot, Portsmouth's Niko Kranjcar, recommended that he move to the Premier League.

Modric underlined his potential during the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign and was instrumental in the 3-2 defeat of England at Wembley in November that alerted clubs across Europe to his talent. Modric's arrival would hasten the departure of Turkey international Emre, but England Under-21 captain Steven Taylor is to be offered a new deal.

"Taylor is a young and promising defender," Newcastle chairman Chris Mort said. "We would like him to stay at Newcastle long term. We will sit down with Steven and his father, and hopefully work something out."

Admit it, you don't like him because he score an own goal.

He is a great all-round player. I don't know many other players like him.

I remember when Jamie Carragher said that they had given up winning the league and Riise came on and said "we will never give up, only cowards quit" How can Liverpool just disown him like that? after what he has done for the club. His goals have won them FA cup and League Cup.

              • Riise has been average for ages. Buying him would be a waste of time as Enrique is already stronger defensively and is a player on the way up. Riise pops up with the odd long range goal, but most of his shots are spooned high and wide, he's a MOTD player in that respect. And he really isn't a free kick specialist.

Riise is the best LWB in the league. For some reason he hasn't been played much this season and when he does his performance is bellow par because the lack of match time.

                    • Riise is a good player and i've never been disappointed with his commitment or attitude but he lacks that defensive egde from players like evra or ashley cole...

i've always seen him as an attacking player playing on the left wing.....

He has scored lots of crucial goals for us, but i think its time we got rid of him and bought a world class left back....

He scored an own goal for us it's not the end of the world, Carragher scored one in the FA cup final and it was looking all doom & gloom...
