Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor has fired a parting shot at French midfielder Charles N'Zogbia, who joined Wigan Athletic yesterday as part of the Magpies' deadline day business.
N'Zogbia's recent behaviour seems to have turned his former team-mates against him. A recent fight between the Frenchman and Andy Carroll at the training ground apparently caused bad feeling between N'Zogbia and the rest of the squad, who also found his increasingly desperate attempts to engineer an exit from St James' Park a little demeaning.
The last straw, for N'Zogbia and the club, was when manager Joe Kinnear, clearly feeling the pressure of the club's current situation, mispronounced the player's name as 'Insomnia' in a TV interview.
N'Zogbia promptly announced he'd been insulted and would never play for Newcastle again. He joined Wigan yesterday, with England Under-21 player Ryan Taylor moving in the opposite direction.
Newcastle's Geordie defender Steven Taylor doesn't seem particularly bothered that the sulking Frenchman has gone, either, implying that N'Zogbia wasn't 'up for' the club's relegation battle.
"We need players who want to be here now," Taylor told The Newcastle Chronicle. "Charles has gone and he didn’t want to be here. He wanted to go – fair enough.
"Now we have to get on and battle. There are new signings here now so we get on with it. Everybody who is here at the moment is up for the fight. We’re in a bad situation – a relegation fight.
"What we need is players who are 100% committed, not players who want to play one week then don’t fancy it the next. We’re happy with what we’ve got and we can see light at the end of the tunnel."
Ahead of this weekend's trip to the West Midlands to face West Bromwich Albion in what is looking an absolutely crucial game, Taylor was clearly feeling serious, but upbeat.
"We need to get as many points as we can on the board as soon as possible," he said.
"We need to take it game by game, if we do that then we will have a great chance of stabilising the situation."
Taylor was also sorry to see Shay Given leave the club, in direct contrast to his feeling about N'Zogbia.
"Shay served the club very well," the defender continued.
"And he was a fantastic servant to the club. We are sad to see him go but life has to on at Newcastle United."
