Not all people speak Spanish in the US nor is it the national language. Is it really too much to ask someone who comes to a country to speak or learn the language? You know how many service men and women take up different languages when we are stationed in other countries? I can assure you, I didn't learn to speak German because it sounds good.

Nothing wrong with having an official language to conduct business with. I agree English in important for everyone everywhere. It’s the international language of business.

The problem lies is people giving other people sh it for speaking another language among themselves. Sound pretty stupid for me to overhear you speaking German and yelling “don’t speak nazi here”!
What business of mine is it if your speaking German to your friend or family at a restaurant.

      Answer. None.

Btw. Where were you stationed. I was in Mannheim for six years. Pops was in army.

Spanish is primarily spoken by brown/black people. I’d say is easily 10x. The carribean, north, central and South America dwarf Spain.
i said in Spain, where the language also originates. your factoid is irrelevant. do you think this is a race issue?

I agree, if she or anyone overhears a conversation and yells at the someone to speak English then that's just re-tarded as they weren't talking to you in the first place. The article says she was talking to the student and the student responds in Spanish. At that moment her telling him to speak English isn't a cause for uproar in my opinion, especially in an American public school.

I was stationed at Spangdahlem for 5 years. Germany is real nice man. I plan on living there once I retire in about 7 years. You ever thought of going back to visit?

It’s all good when Irish flags are waved and bag pipes are blaring doe...
context matters. if it's on a holiday or whatever, most Americans don't care. but when you're waving a foreign flag for political reasons like in a protest rally then it's obviously an issue.

A substitute teacher in Texas scolded a high school student for talking in Spanish in class, instructing him to “speak English” because he’s in America, video shows.

The unidentified teacher, who is white, made the demand last week at Socorro High School in El Paso after she caught junior Carlos Cobian watching soccer on his cellphone in class, according to footage obtained by KVIA.

“Speak English, we’re in America,” the teacher said, prompting groans and jeers from Cobian’s classmates. “Give me your phone.”

Moments earlier, the teen asked the teacher in Spanish why he was being singled out, as several other students were also using their cellphones. But the educator was seemingly unmoved by Cobian’s attempt to engage in any discussion with her, video shows.

“I was shocked, and then I got a little mad,” the teen told the station. “For her to come to teach at Socorro, being a sub, like 90 percent of the students here are Mexican and Latinos.”

Cobian, who said he considered the teacher’s comment racist, claims he didn’t antagonize her during the interaction. He was later removed from class and questioned by the school’s security personnel, but he was not disciplined in connection with the incident, KVIA reports.

“She actually tried to say that I pushed her, but I didn’t and some of the videos [showed] that I didn’t really push her,” the teen told the station.

It was the first time anyone at the school admonished him for speaking Spanish, Cobian told KWKT.

The brief exchange remains under investigation by district administrators, according to a statement released by the Socorro Independent School District.

“Appropriate action, per our employee code of conduct policies, will be taken,” the statement reads.

A message seeking comment from district officials early Wednesday was not immediately returned.

The teacher should be “permanently banned” from the classroom, according to the League of United Latin American Citizens, which bills itself as the largest Latino organization in the country.

“Teachers and all school staff are meant to be leaders and mentors to our children — not racists who harbor anti-immigrant sentiments,” LULAC national president Domingo Garcia said in a statement. “It is abominable that this institutionalized racism against the Hispanic community in Texas hasn’t ended.”

As with any incidents involving kids, best wait for the full story and investigation to be done. You’d be amazed how often these stories are much to do about nothing and kids just wanting to make headlines.

Wish the damn media would do the same.

                Yup.

I still recall the graphic. It was like a WWII soldier, but his face was a skull. He was carrying a rifle and looked mean as hell.

Then you had those words written on it. Lol

You're right, heads would explode if a kid wore that today.

what would be funny here is that if the teacher knew how to speak spanish or is an immigrant from Spain, but wanted the student to speak english on general principle. their dumb race card routine falls apart.
