  • [REAL TALK] New Poll shows majority of Democrats prefer socialism and views Capitalism negatively

Democrats have a more favorable view of socialism than capitalism, according to a poll released by Gallup on Monday.

Of the Democrats who responded to the questionnaire, 57 percent view socialism positively while 47 percent view capitalism positively.

Just two years ago in 2016, 56 percent of Dems had a positive view of capitalism. But there has been little movement on their feelings towards socialism since 2010, when 53 percent of poll respondents had a positive view.

On the other hand, Republicans feel very positive about capitalism, according to the poll. In a minor bounce from 2016, 71 percent of Republicans are now in favor of capitalism while only 16 percent have positive sentiments towards socialism.

The poll comes as the popularity of self-identifying Democratic socialists like Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, and New York congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez remains high.

Socialism was most popular with the 18-29 age group, with 51 percent saying they held a positive view, while only 28 percent of the 65+ crowd support the concept.

This is the problem with identity politics. People get suckered into a false dichotomy.

The best and strongest economies use elements of both socialism and capitalism as applicable. Pure communism, pure socialism or pure capitalism would all equal the same thing - pure hell.

Anyone trying to sell one or the other is an idiot.

I'm inclined to agree. I think a capitalist economy at heart with certain, carefully chosen and well applied regulations inspired by socialism is great. There really isn't much reason for drastic economic change from the way the USA has it now.

Yep. Capitalism has proven strengths which only idiots would ignore.

Unbridled Capitalism would be a nightmare which only idiots would ignore.

People want simple answers. Simple principles. But reality is just a bit more complex than that.

We need to look at things like capitalism, socialism, communism, government regulation, deregulation etc as tools to be applied when and where they are needed for best effect.

But a lot of people think of these things as ends in their own right, instead of the means to an ends.

Still, I suppose that is what you can expect from a species that evolved from apes. Clever, but nothing like as clever as we could be.

All economies are termed “mixed”. We are and have been this way for many decades a mixture of both socialism and capitalism. The right wing media tries to maintain that we are some utopian capitalistic nation but this can’t be further from the truth. The combination of both systems allowed to flux as the world around us changes makes us much stronger than any monolithic system.

We shouldn't be surprised, most millennials are Dems and never had a job or ever contributed to the work force, so they depend on mommy and daddy to provide until they realize that they have to grow up and get a job.

It’s the fact we have socialism and capitalism existing under one roof allowed to flex freely that is the reason we won’t ever become a second rate nation. Although having a lying President right now is a national disgrace really beyond words.
