The federal government should take jurisdiction and create recovery/work camps well outside of metropolitan areas that force addicts and psychotics to get the help they need. Rehab them and then put them to work. Otherwise incarcerate them. Instead, liberal mayors proudly wear their enabling as an accomplishment.

Yes, there was pressure to shut them down after several news stories uncovered abuse and neglect that took place in most of the asylums. Most of them were worse than prisons. Geraldo did a big story on one that was the first to expose the abusive conditions.

Yeah, there should have been an overhaul of these institutions. But it was too easy for abuse to go unreported. Today it would be easier with video surveillance. Right now, big Pharma is what replaced asylums. They basically over-medicate them and then cross their fingers. Meanwhile, there are lots of mentally ill walking around and living on the streets.
