One merely needs to recall the POUM gunning down their Anarchist comrades (to whom belonged the famous Foreign Legion, which included George Orwell and Ernest Hemingway among its ranks) on the streets of Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War in their frenzy to cement their authority, even as Franco's fascist troops were at the gates.
