U.S. Sanctions Russia Over Election Hacking; Russia Threatens to Retaliate

The State Department expelled 35 Russian operatives from the Russian embassy in Washington and the Russian consulate in San Francisco on Thursday. The officials and their families were given 72 hours to leave the U.S.

The State Department also notified Russia that as of Friday Moscow would be denied access to two Russian government-owned compounds—one in Maryland and one in New York.

this guy has been a complete foreign policy disaster for not just america, but for the entire western world......

35 individuals being expelled are diplomats. Update: These diplomats have been identified as cover intel operatives (not unique to Ru, plenty of countries including US do it, the point is not to get caught :P)
The 6 Ru individuals being sanctioned are specifically named GRU leaders and cyber operators/ facilitators. Update: 4x of the top GRU chiefs and 2x GRU-affiliated cyber criminals.
Two of the Ru en****** being sanctioned are the entirety of GRU and SVR (Ru's military and foreign intel services), and the other three are front companies for GRU.
2 Ru spy compounds being closed in Maryland and New York. this is IMO the craziest part. Update: Homeland Security Adviser says these were legally bought as recreational facilities by Ru govt, but were monitored by US intel for years as bases for Ru surveillance ops, and says these are just the first wave in a crackdown.
The technical details of the Russian cyber intrusion sets will be publicly released to render them moot for public good and force Ru to develop new ones. Update: Looks like theyre starting the release

So far, the United States of America's retaliation appears to be a typically calculated maneuver of the kind that has characterized the Obama administration. Going directly after the spy agencies is a convenient way of exposing their presence without having to reveal all of the classified information that would, in turn, let the Russians know exactly how they were traced. It's also a substantiating move that our agencies are moving to officially pin the blame on Russia, using the aforementioned classified evidence. It legitimizes this all, in light of Trump's past, current, and probable future denials.

I'm curious as to what covert action the United States will take. The last time a country interfered with procedures in the U.S., their Internet was "mysteriously and all of a sudden" shut down (North Korea). Russia is on a more sophisticated level, however, so the U.S. will necessarily have to be intelligent in its use of cyber weapons, so as to avoid unnecessary escalation.

My bet is on that they have already implanted and/or extracted what they desired, and hence the fuss over what "will be" done. If I had to guess, it's something that targets Putin personally, but still extends into displaying the "superiority" of U.S. cyber capability. In other words, a slap to Putin and a slap to his cyber military.

We will see.
