The world? OJ was just a former football player so why did everyone care so much?

The O.J Simpson case certainly wasn't the most important trial in human history. Not even close. It was pretty entertaining nightly television for the American viewing audience, though. It had all of the prerequisite elements that the 24 hour news cycle now relies upon to push a trial to the forefront of primetime television in the quest for ratings.

The O.J trial is to news media what Kubrick is to cinema fans.

Probably because it was beamed worldwide and a lot of people thought there was enough evidence that pointed to him being guilty.

A big fact was of course that he was a celebrity. Add to that the fact he led the police on a chase down the freeway to avoid capture. It lasted hours and was shown in it's entirety during the NBA playoffs on national television in which there were millions of viewers. Then the trial and the fact that he got off when it appeared he was guilty.
