It's interesting to me that these politicians, just because they didn't pull the actual triggers in person, are able to sleep at night with so many deaths and ruined lives resulting from their casual, off-hand decisions.

Depends on the war and what's to gain. If a war is going longer than usual because of a lie/mistake, winning is 'toughing' it out for as long as possible and make up things as time goes on to justify the time spent.
