It is common knowledge that Bin Laden's kidney's were failing. Proving impossible to obtain the necessary operation while in hiding, he was told by physicians that he had only a few months to live.

Bin Laden therefore came to the conclusion that he could strike his most effective blow against America by an act of self sacrifice in purposely leaking his whereabouts to the CIA. His reasoning being that anything he could do to boost Obama's waning chances of reelection could ultimately hurt America more than any conceivable terrorist act that Al Qaeda could ever hope to achieve.
