Jack, what you're doing is creating your own definition for what a sport is. A sport is simply something you play or participate in which requires organized rules, skill and strategy. A sport can be a competitive game where there's a loser and a winner, or a pack of losers and a pack of winners.
In the late 1800's, the International Olympic Committee, came to an agreement to recognize Chess as a sport.
You are looking at sports like Basketball, Hockey, Soccer and Football, and using them as a measuring stick to what a sport should be. And that's where you fail. Because you already fail on understanding the universal definition of a sport.

In my definition of sport, a guy has to be a good athlete to be able to participate in it. My definition is the only one that matters here.
You can call a chess player a sportsman, but that would just make you look like an ass.
