He allowed himself to be drawn into the NATO orbit which has been moving eastward for the last 3 decades toward Russia's borders. If Zelensky just went along with the Minsk Accords and agreed never to join NATO there would not have been any military action. He still had an out with a peace agreement shortly after hostilities began, Unfortunately, he listened to the "counsel" of Boris Johnson and didn't take the off ramp and peace.

The result is that we have what we have today thanks to Zelensky's greed and ego. But, since it's ethnic Ukrainians (and Russians) dying on the battlefield and not his people Zelensky is willing to make that sacrifice.

Jewlensky was made president to make peace with the Russians in the Donbass and restore good relations with the Russian Empire

Jewlensky instead betrayed the Ukrainian people when he threw away a most generous peace deal in April 2022:

*You keep the Donbass but leave it alone

*Russia would even give UA some kind of compromise on Crimea!

Now he has Ukraine stuck in an unwinnable war with this policy:
