Guardians a major UK National Daily - left leaning - and generally respected in terms of journalistic quality even where it's political stances ain't to everyone's taste. Either way they've been firmly supporting both the Ukrainians and our support for em to date. That's why I'm a little surprised at their pessimistic tone.

And yes of course Russia is economically weak aside from its natural resources, that's a very large part of what the broader conflict between Western aligned interests and Russia is about. Russia seeks to lever it's vast mineral resources into economic and political power whilst the US and it's European allies seek to restrict and constrain it's increasing assertiveness.

God hates "Democracy." That is, the American style of empire. True democracy, in the sense implied, would need a nation state. An Empire like the current Anglo/American is an open dictatorship hidden behind a veil of sweet sounding language - that's real Liberal Democracy. Nothing at all to do with freedom. How can a country with secret police, surveillance and a military industrial complex dictating foreign policy be called free? The America of hope and freedom - the nation state - died with JFK.
