man, just say what's on your mind. for example, if i were you, i'd approach her by apologizing in advance for being a terrible conversation starter. tell her you suck at this stuff but you're hoping she'll feel sorry for you for your handicap.

self deprecating humour only works for really confident, rich, or really handsome guys who have already got status.
