  • Sparring with heavier opponents

I sometimes will spar with somebody much heavier than me, not full blown shots are thrown but i definitly see the difference in power. Is it good or bad to spar against somebody outside your weight class?

I am a heavyweight and used to spar a lot with middle and light heavyweights to face a faster apponent. They were fine with it and some even liked facing the bigger guy. why not.

yeah my first spar was against a smaller opponent, by about 20 pounds but it was especially not fair for him because even 20 pounds lighter he was much slower. just doesen't have fast twitch muscles even tho hes in good shape

I much prefer to spar bigger guys. They are always more willing to stand inside and trade with me not to mention they are usually easier to hit aswell.

yah the guy i sometimes spar with is a lot slower and heavier, i can work on counter pounching and slips really well. I just wanted to make sure that trading punches with him was worth my time.

its a great idea when done correctly. just make sure the bigger guy is under control and not swinging at anywhere near 100%. the extra poundage can literally kill.

90% of my sparring has been with much bigger guys. i like it. and u can really tell the difference when u do get to go against a smaller weaker guy after that.

Oshea, sparring with people heavier than you can prove to be a great benefit. Cuz when it comes time to fight someone your size, they feel all the more easy to handle.

Same here. I'm a heavyweight and if nobody my size is around my trainer will throw me in with a middleweight. Obviously you aren't gonna load up on someone half your size, and you are just moving around. I'll tap him with some hard jabs here and there and land some average body shots cuz people sparring still have to know what its like to get hit.

Even sparring against someone half your weight and going light is still better than anything you can do on the floor. An active body in front of you who is throwing punches at you and you can hit back (hard or not) is still great work.
