    Lingering black eye

Had a good, hard scrap in the gym a few months ago...when all was said and done I got a my nose busted and a black eye. Next day the pressure from my nose caused the raccoon eyes. The purple and the swelling went away after two weeks...but it is still dark and a bit discolored under my eye for damn near 5 months now. It looks like I haven't slept in a couple days.

Anyone have a black eye linger that long? Know any tricks to treat it? I used every cream in the book and took some arnica but still taking forever to go away. Black eyes have normally disappeared quick for me but for some reason this time its hanging around.

take a stainless steel spoon (or any metal, whatever) and throw it in the fridge or freezer. when its nice and cold, take it out and rub it on your black eye, applying a decent amount of pressure. this will reduce the swelling and the coloration.

this technique also works on hickeys.

It is possible that the capillaries under your eyes may have been damaged. This happens with insomniacs; they end up with permanent dark circles under their eyes. See a doctor if you can. A physician may be able to do something for it.

Thanks...the only thing that gets me is that it appears to get lighter over time but seems like it take 2 months just to get a miniscule shade less dark. If I do see one, what kind of doctor do I see. Like last month I made the mistake of going for an annual checkup and picked some new idiot doctor who just kept telling me "You shouldn't box..." I wanted to ****in smack him.

Who would handle this kinda thing? Dermatologist? Opthamologist?

I would recommend that you go to a sports physician. There are MD's or DO's (osteopaths) in any given city who specialize in sports injuries and physical rehab. He or she may recommend you to a specialist if necessary. Personally, I go to an osteopath who is the team physician for one of the major league sports franchises in my city. I have a very physical and moderately hazardous day job that lands me in the ER a couple times a year, mostly with mild trauma-type injuries (busted fingers, concussions, sprains, etc.), and so far he has done right by me every time.

If I lived in a smaller town, I'd find out who the high school wrestling or football coach (or college coach) recommends his players go see. There's usually one jock doc in every town, no matter how small. Good luck.

My doctor said, "I think it's great you've taken up boxing. Especially at your age."

              I said, "Really?"

He said, "Yeah. I have boat payments, you know."
