  • Sparring. . . rules?

I just started sparring today. Was a little off. I was sparring a kind of friend of mine at the gym, and I wasn't exactly positive about how intense I should be fighting. He seemed like he wasn't really going all out on me, and when I caught him with a couple nice straight rights, I kinda felt think he thought I was an ******* or something. Basicly Im just wondering if there are any like unspoken rules of sparring or sparring etiquette or something? I just figured I could pretty much pound away and he would do the same. So, rules or . . .? Thanks.

Simple. He hits you hard, you hit him even harder.

Sparring is not a place to pull your punchs, but at the same time if you see you are hurting your sparring mate then back off, till he recovers then throw bombs again.

If the trainer feels you are doing too much damage to each other then the trainer will step in, if he sees both of you are at the same level and can handle each others power, bombs away.

Your first time sparrin it should be nice and easy the guy your against should be goin light, it'll pick up soon. I sparred a guy last week was his first time I just threw light jabs at him the whole time when he tried gettin me ina corner i'd throw a lil right and put him back.

Sparred him again yesterday went much harder actualy threw hooks this time.
Next time i'll try goin all out seein how he's 2years older then me

We have a rule, let the other guy set the pace. Then you both accelerate together until you're at a level you're comfortable with. We rarely spar full-speed, because we spar every day as part of our training. Once a week or so two hotshots will get in the ring and really have it out, but that's not part of the daily workout.

This is probably the norm in most gyms. I usualy don't spar very hard unless Im training for an upcoming fight or tournement. Then I travel to other gyms to spar at almost full power and speed. 80% or so. When Im in the gym just keeping sharp and doing a favor for another guy. I'll talk to him, ask ?s like
"pick it up?" " I'll go on d only" " take it easy" just to have a good communication it is a learning process not a fight. Although there have been times I've had to level an inflating ego trying to prove a point while sparing with me. I get scolded by trainers I should know better, I figure that when the guy trys to hit hard and is obviously attempting to hurt somebody, he is going to git hit eventually I'll show him what it feels like. It usually only takes a good hook to settle him down.

Friendship ends when you climb between those ropes. Generally speaking you should not engage in hard sparring with your friends unless they are fighters. There really isn't a polite or friendly way to hit somebody. The average guy just does not understand what boxing is all about, nor are they capable of defending themselves properly .

Your training partners are in my book the best of a fighters friends. You shed blood, sweat and tears with them for an endless amount of hours. That crock my vegetable friend opened his post with is nonsense. As for the rest of his ****ty post. Sparring isn't a fight, It is a learning process. It is easy to comminicate the level of spar you wish to enguage in. I know I do it every day. Never piss off or hurt a friends feelings 9 times out of 9 we laugh about mistakes and strong points of the exersize. Get it right Potatoes. I'm getting tired of your mislead posts. Cleaning up your mess is exhausting. I feel obligated to do so because I for one am in love with this sport, and would hate to see an expiring athlete mislead by your meaningless unsuported nonsense
