  • thinking of replacing my heavy bag

    ok, i currenly use these:

    -big 5 (retail) 100lbs. canvas heavybag ($65)

    -imf tech training gloves (16 oz.)

    -everlast mexican style 180inch gold handwraps

    i've been using those 3 for a couple months now.

    no matter what, my right knuckle always gets sore after a workout (about 5 3min. rounds). from what i hear about these cheap canvas heavybags, they are filled with hard sand, and it's like solid brick on the bottom half of the bag.

    so i wait for it to heal (about 2-4 days). then i hit the bag again. same results. some rounds i focus on technique, some rounds i focus on maximum power. nothing hurts at all except for my right knuckle. my wrists are perfectly fine, as with every other bone in my hands/arms.

    i decided to use my imf tech training gloves for the heavybag because they are too hard to spar with (the striking surface is hard, many others would agree with me).


    so i'm thinking of getting a new pair of bag gloves and a new heavybag:

    grant super power bag gloves (large, 12 oz.)

    definitely get any bag with a liner, doesnt necessarily have to be a water one.

    I doubt that buying those technologically archaic gloves as opposed to your imf tech's will help. Maybe go for the imf-tech bag gloves? Might not wear down as fast.

        i'll just put the grant bag gloves and ringside super bag gloves on hold until i can test out my imf tech training gloves on the water/foam filled heavbag.

        it might just be my canvas sandfilled bag that's caused the knuckle soreness.

          wrap more around your knuckles and tape them down between ur fingers...

          for the heavybag, you could try hitting it with a bat on the bottom.

            You will love the Grant gloves. and the water filled bags are being used a lot more to save hard hitters knuckles and hands. So you got a good remedy for the problem. Those cheap bags and gloves you get in sporting goods stores are not meant for the type of abuse boxers or enthusiasts will inflict. Really they are more of a novelty item or once a week fitness tool. Big companies make there bread and butter selling garbage at discount prices. The filling "of the bag and gloves" are as cheap as you can get. So is the shell, or cover.
            If you can afford the combo you sugested go for it. You'll be more comfortable with regular use.

              The ideal situation would be for you to go to a good gym and have a good trainer, then the problem with hand injuries is unlikely to occur. I assume from what you have said that you are not lucky enough to be in a ideal situation. There are limits to what you can do with self training, however if you have talent and motivation you can go quite a long way.

              If you have an injury, quit hitting the heavybag and let it heal. May take a few weeks, but if that is what you have to do, then do it. There are other things can occupy your time, like shadow boxing. You can also improvise some defensive ring drills with a friend. Learning to be hard to hit is much more important than putting out half an effort on a heavybag. Once the injury has healed put yourself on a training schedule of three days a week on the heavybag, with one day on and at least one day off. It might take a couple of years for your bones to harden.
