You have to flex your forearm muscles to even get your fist into the vertical position. The wrist feels clearly stronger when the hand is horisontal, at least to me.
On a straight punch, turning the hand from vertical to horisontal gives the punch extra power and snap. When throwing a long hook, you can utilise the turning of the hand in the same way. It is also easier to land the punch clean on the knuckles in this way, when the opponent is at a distance.
I do not agree that should be the standard position of your hand with every hook. I don't feel the bones in the wrist and fore arm are properly aligned to maximize the power of the punch. When the thumb is up these parts are aligned and more stable. Im sure its one of those areas in our great sport which has no standard. And allows for variety and personalization. Which in my opinion is always good.

Well what you wrote was:

I'm not trying to bust your ballz, I was born in Italy and English wasn't really my first language either- so I'm not trying to pick on you, just trying to point out where my misunderstanding comes from.
I still don't know how either type of hook can cause a DQ.
Personally, I like to practise horizontal hooks in close, but about 99% of the time I use vertical hooks - it's my favorite punch.
