  • knee tendonitis/runners knee

    hey everyone,
earlier in the summer i had severe tendonitis in my right knee and pretty much realized i had runners knee. Now my left knee has begun to give me problems. I dont run alot, but am trying to make my universities boxing team and running is required so I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions to help prevent tendonitis/runners knee or any type of ideas to help it heal. I do have a knee brace (with those hot/cold therapy tabs) and I also have advil/painkillers. Is popping 2 advils before a run sufficient? Any help would be appreciated since I know alot of people also have this problem.

You need to do several things. First, look into getting some orthotics to correct your footstrike. Secondly, buy some decent running shoes, maybe some Spiras even. Thirdly, get off the pavement and cement and onto the grass and dirt. Fourth, do some stretching. Fifth, get on the treadmill and off the street for a while to give the knee a break if necessary. Sixth, get a running coach to teach you proper running form, training habits, and running strategy. Don't get in the habit of taking pain killers or anti-inflammatories at your no doubt young age, as these drugs only mask the symptoms and don't correct the underlying problem. Practice "RICE" after running until the problem is under control, e.g. Rest - Ice - Compression - Elevation. Avoid running downhill. Running is a science, just like anything else.
