  • Southpaw vs. Southpaw

Sparred against another southpaw today. In some ways, it was more comfortable; in others, it was downright scary. That left comes in at an unexpected angle. I'm open to suggestions on fighting southpaw vs. another southpaw.

Links to video would be great, too. TIA.

You are southpaw too, eh? I am southpaw as well and am trying to figure out what a southpaw's 'advantage' is when he fights against orthodox fighters? What do you do against orthodox fighters to take advantage? For your question I imagine its the same as two orthodox fighters fighting each other, just the opposite side. Just should utilize the left more in my opinion.

southpaws biggest advantage is that he is used to sparing othodox people but the average othodox person dooesnt spar to many southpaws

alot of things are backwards when fighting a southpaw. have to use the right cross more often to open things up.

Unfortunately, I'm a southpaw, too. So I don't have a right cross unless I switch stances. I do have an overhand right that worked OK; I'd take a step to the outside, pivot, and throw the right heavy.

Circle away from his left, and remember to always set up your left with a jab. Same as an orthodox vs. orthodox.

So. . . backwards, then. Makes sense. Usually I circle to my right. Should he generally be going to his left, too, then? Assuming that he knows more than I do? (He's been fighting nearly a year longer -- this is likely the guy I'm going to fight in my local bout next month.)

Are you a brawler or a boxer?

If your a boxer you wont have that much probley just try to jab and figure him out.

sparr with guys who are southpaw and when you shadowbox imagine your fighting a southpaw.

If he right jab you do this and that..etc

I'm a brawler and an infighter. Often described as a "pressure-fighter." I'm working on my boxing skills, but with my build, I get out-boxed (read: out-ranged) by most guys in my weight class. (I'm 5'9" 170 lbs.)
