  • Gyms in Tampa/Orlando Area?

Hey guys, just joined this site. Im 19 and have no boxing experience except for the afterschool matches I had back in high school which doesnt count for ****. Anyways, I wanna get serious and find a good gym to start going to. right now im 170 lbs and 5 foot 11 but i think i can drop to 160ish without too much problem. anyways if anyone knows of a gym in the tampa/orlando area where I could just walk in and start training I would greatly appreciate it. Or if anyone has any tips on some training I can do before just walking in that would be great. Thanks - Ryan

good luck mate. i would make sure your conditioning is atleast decent before going to a gym or you will feel hella winded.

what would you consider decent conditioning? not trying to be an ass but would working out regularly and running 3 or 4 times a week be considered decent?

yeah i mean really you can go to a gym out of shape and build up from there, its just that the better in shape you are, the longer you can go, and the more you can practice/pick up. i say you should be fine though.

Running 2 miles in 14-18 minutes is decent.

at my gym the first day they gave me the option of just watching or training. i did the jumprope, shadowboxing, speedbag and running work. they dont let us spar for a few monthes, and i couldnt hit the heavy bag/mitts since i didnt have my waiver signed yet. you can probably expect to do some light training, not that hardcore though.

Don't know if you are actually in Tampa or Orlando, but I used to live up in St. Pete.

In the Tampa area, the guys at Hurricane are damn solid. If you are outside of Tampa, like in St. Pete, the St. Pete Boxing Club is also a good bet and there used to be the 4th Street Boxing Club in St. Pete as well. There was also Brooks Boxers in Tampa that was good, as was Cantellano's Boxing Gym in Plant City, Fl. (outside of Tampa as well).

                  Wow. Old thread.

Is Brooks Boxers still there (used to be in the College Hill/Ponce De Leon section)?

There also used to be the Dragon Boxing Club off MLK, though that's been closed. It was run by Coach Bill Davis (don;t know what happened to him).
