  • Running the stairs?

What do you guys think about running bleachers on a stadium?
I run everynight, and usually after I get my 3 or 4 miles, I finish up with ~3 minutes all out 3 times on the bleachers...
Am I hurting myself...or is it good for me?

    Thanks guys

Doing it in addition to roadwork is ok. I only do stair running when I can't do roadwork though...

So you guys dont see a problem? I really enjoy doing it, it just makes me feel good...I thought it might be putting too much pressure on my shins or something?

I run / walk stairs for an hour every morning. I live at the top of a big-ass hill, and I have a few blocks of cement stairs that run all the way up it. I run the first few sets, then alternate walking/running the rest. I'll change them up: walk one set 2 at a time, lunge up the next set 3 at a time, run up the next set 1 at a time, do pushups at the top facing up, or down, etc. It's been six months and I still don't have any shin problems. Like anything, don't overdo it and you should be OK.

What's interesting is that I still can't run them for a solid hour, and it's been six months; I'm good for about ten minutes of actual stair-running, and then I have to walk for a bit. When I started, I couldn't make it up one flight at a run. Hopefully some day I'll be able to run them for the whole hour. That would rock.

I do additional roadwork at lunch at work, 3-4 miles.

The only time I got shin splints was when I bought new running shoes. I threw those pieces of **** out immediately, took a week away from the stairs and the skipping rope, and went back to the brand I'd been using. Talk about an expensive mistake...

There is nothing bad about running stairs, unless your substituting it for roadwork, like other people have said. Star-running works primarily your calves and backside (unless the gap between the stairs is large, then your quads get into it). Developing your calves will help you with "staying on your toes" as they wont get tired as easily and you wont find yourself flatfooted in the ring. Keep it up, its a fun exercise.
