  • Fist orientation in the Hook

do you hold your fist vertical (thumb facing up) or horizontal when you throw the hook, i ask because most boxers are taught the former but jack dempsey (one of the best hookers) says it is better for bone alignment to hold it horizontal.
which do you think is best

I throw using the horizonal method. Thats how I was taught and it works good for me.

To me, it depends on distance. If I'm inside throwing a close, pulling hook, I use the thumb-vertical. If I'm reaching out for a counter hook or trying to set something up, I use horizontal.

I throw it the normal thumb facing down.

I'm with Ringo on this one. Horisontal thumb is definitely best for longer range hooks, but personally I like to throw it with the thumb up, when I'm in close range.

I guess either way can work but I'm in the habit of throwing it horizontally, sometimes I do it vertically just to mix it up when I shadowbox but 90% of the time it's horizontally for me.

I was taught thumb facing up so you can punch with your bigger knuckles. Its easier to break your hand if you end up landing with your pinky knuckle.
