  • newbie - advice needed - headgear

I've done some MMA work and I'm looking to improve my standup with a bit of boxing. I've had a sparring session with my twin brother, and thought it would be a good idea to buy some headgear. I'm worried that one of us will walk into a punch, or make a mistake and hit the other harder / not in the area we intended (ie: nose, mouth) so I'm looking to prevent the damage buying some headgear. He however insists that he doesn't need the headgear and "that's the risk you take when you put the gloves on".

What can you guys recommend? Do we need to wear headgear? Do the pro's (protection) outweight the cons (he says it will make one's head hotter and lower the amount of vision).

    Any help would be great.

Hey man, welcome to the forums. First of all, here's the deal: Whenever your sparring/practicing, headgear and mouthpieces are ALWAYS a good idea. Always. Yes, your vision might be a little impaired and you might have to take a few more breaks for sweat in your eyes, etc. However, you catch a punch in the temple without headgear and you might wake up wondering who hit you. Same punch with headgear on might back you up and you'll still be standing to tell your partner "good punch." Think about it like an NFL quarterback. They wear red jerseys in practice so they don't take unnecessary hits so they can be tip-top for the real thing. Your headgear is your red jersey.

Headgear is good for sparring unless you're a pro.

Thanks for the advice guys! I was looking at getting a full-face headguard - do you think the extra protection is worth it or just overkill?

This is the one I was looking at getting:

whereas this was the other style I was considering:

Any ideas? Any more comments in relation to my first question would be appreciated still too. Thanks.

The onyl headgear I've tried is Title and that's good but I can't give my opinion on others.

I wouldn't get the full face one. From what I hear from everyone who's tried them is that it's hard to breath and see...plus, since you're boxing, you're gonna get hurt later on anyways, so you might as well et used to it now

Always were Headgear. Skip the full face kind try Title the best for the money. Get the mexican style. It is my favorite.
