  • MMA/kickboxing gym warning me about taking boxing training

    Put my kickboxing membership on hold today as I want to take boxing for 6 months to get comfortable with my hands before I fully commit to kickboxing/mma.

    They warned me that they don’t recommend this as they said boxing develops negative habits that translate poorly to kickboxing. Would the positives of doing boxing for a bit outweigh the negatives or no? Would the habits developed be difficult to unlearn when I come back, or are they trying to get me to stay?

    if you boxed for a long time, most likely starting as a kid... that experience will serve you well as you adapt to MMA

    just like it did with Conor McGregor

    but it would be a mistake to train conventional boxing when trying to learn MMA imo

    training is about developing technique to the point where it becomes instinctive, which is not what a new guy needs to learn for MMA

    the distance and punch selection are totally different for a start

    guys like the Diaz boys have a hardcore MMA grounding, they are the exception rather than the rule

      Unless planning to take boxing serious or doing a crossover match dont souly focus on boxing believe me i have a karate muay thai and brief 2 yrs of school wrestling(pedestrian but more than avg joe) background i tried to focus reinvent my kickboxing career and mma after got discharged military. Well if you focuses on mma incorporate the boxing into it dont focus just on boxing. The stance is different for boxing doesnt protect you against other strikes and d... Sure not grappling. If you want to work on hands to better mma kickboxing is perfect middleground. Theres different styles different rules a more boxing orientated kickboxing style is dutch kickboxing think nieky holzken a world class kickboxer and compentent contender boxer and tyrone spong. Want to do mma and or kb yet get better with hands focus dutch kickboxing and whatever grappling your focused on judo wrestling bjj luta livre a mix ect

Youll become a way better more competent boxer while still working on kickboxing skills so no big adjustment then add in still got plenty time focus groundwork. Add in u still can always just add boxing monday to have that day hands only while every other day dutch kickboxing and ground class

            Do both, also normally kickboxing instructors are fairly handy when it comes to boxing training anyway

              You're used to boxing, never do Muay...

              In boxing you have to bend your knee a bit for agility. That's a big no no in Muay. Man, you show Buakaw a bent knee, he'll literally break it

                Muay guys will also have a hard time boxing cus those guys don't do lateral movements, its easy to get them.

                Those 2 disciplines are a bad mix

                    No matter who you train with even for a short time you can always learn something. Even if you think a certain style may not perfectly suit you there may we be certain moves or ways of setting up punches that you can add to the tool box.
