  • Struggling with footwork

I've been boxing for years and have had 3 fights. My footwork is terrible and I don't know if I have the ability to improve due to flat arches which is a condition.

I get caught by clever, fast moving fighters who can find angles. All I do is walk pretty much and plant my feet. I want to box on the move and use the whole ring rather than plant my feet and rely on head movement on the ropes. If I can use footwork I'll be able to be more attacking and fight on the front foot.

There are loads of drills out there but I want to know the best ones I can use everyday to help me become a fast fighter

The hand that you were dealt, with the flat feet, simply sucks for boxing. Learn to deal with it or you will have to find another sport. I'm sure that other fighters had to deal with it through the sports time, they did so, and so will you...…...Rockin'

      Take some salsa classes. Seriously.

Sucks with the flat feet but more likely than not, it’s not the only reason. Work on your rhythm and balance as best you can, use Whatever orthopedic shoes youre supposed to use.

Some people just have naturally better coordination on the move. If you can develop a better sense of distance, you dont have to be especially fleet footed. Look at Canelo. He’s got excellent footwork, though it isn't particularly light or fleet. He does have incredible waist and head movement with an impeccable sense of distance. Doesnt have to bounce as far or move as much as someone else because his balance and overall game is great.

Do the best with what you’ve got and adapt and put in even more time. If youve only been at it a couple of years You cant expect to move like a seasoned cuban who was in the cuban school of boxing since 5 years old.

Put in the work and even more time. I dont know how bad you suffer from the flat feet and how bay it effects your balance or shins, hips, back, etc so forgive me. All I can offer you is some encouragement and some (what I think) is advice to help ya along

Don’t get discouraged practice, time and discipline can overcome a lot. You may never be a “Sugar Ray”
        But that does not
Mean you have bad footwork. Stay planted and balanced but you must always cut the ring off as you move. Head movement and feints to keep the other guy off balance.

Skip lots to help the muscles in your feet, and shadow box in the ring moving around imagine yourself cutting the ring off a quick guy.
Not every good fighter is quick on their feet.

What are your jump rope sessions like? Skipping helps with economy of motion, being light on your feet and staying on the balls of your feet. Can you jump for 20mins straight?
How about shadow boxing? Practice being more mobile and the movements you want to improve.
Do you have any exercises for rhythm and timing
Focused practice on improving specific skills has been known to work.

I can skip consistently for 15-20 mins yes which is why I wonder, how come I'm ok with that but can't apply it in the ring because skipping requires being light on your feet. Occasionally I get pains when I skip but overall I'm ok.

Going to do lots of drills and work on it in shadow boxing from now on

Read everyone's responses, thanks everyone for the advice. I think the best thing to do is practise everyday and focus on footwork so I can have at least decent footwork to help me out box my opponent and help my defence
