    Closing your fist on impact

Okay so on this forum from a recent post, I have read that you should keep your fist open, close on impact. After doing research, this is true. Is this something you do with each and ever punch? For example, if your on the inside against a opponent or hitting the heavy bag. Should you keep them open and close on impact on every punch, or are there times where it’s best to just keep them clenched? This is something I’m not used to, definitely will be working on this the next couple of weeks.

It becomes a habit over time but honestly I doubt anyone does this 100% of the time.

A solid fist is obviously best for safety and power, but I won't lie and say that every single one of my punches against a heavy bag are with strongly clenched fists.

Look at the recent BS going on with Fury right now... Not only are his hands relaxed during his jabs, his fingers are extended. This is common for flicker jabs and help keep reach and speed at their maximum.

Handwraps and gloves are for the safety of the puncher, not the one getting punched. You should strive to clench at the last possible second but your equipment will help when you can't meet that mark.

The biggest thing to remember is to stay relaxed, especially at the shoulders. Not clenching your fists until the last second helps with this. If you're too tight you're going to be slow af and telegraph everything.

The thing with this is it must be practiced and in the front of thoughts for the first week or so. After that it'll just be what you do. Funking up on this will result in you injuring yourself. Hands are so fragile, just make sure that your fist is tight when you land.

Once you get a hand injury it is with you for life..……Rockin'

That's bull**** bro, always got way more power in my shots when keeping my rear hand firmly closed into a fist. I mean the difference was marked, suddenly guys started backing up from my shots a lot more in sparring even and everyone I fight is a good but bigger than me.

Probably because you were throwing it like a giant telegraphed monster. If you're tense, you're slow.

Lol that's really not the case. I don't telegraph much since I use my footwork to create angles a lot and I punch quite fast in combination so it's hard to keep up. The difference between having my fist open or not is the difference between shoeshining and pain. Plus you're not that tense when you close your fist. Telegraphing comes from loading up on punches which is usually given away by your feet and upper body movement, not your closed fist. By the way I'm a straw weight so I move very fast for everyone I spar. I also fight at bantamweight or featherweight because no one is in my weight class.

Do you have difficulty multitasking or any other mental handicaps? ……..Rockin'

I often try to keep it solid and try my best to keep my wrist safe. Once i get the problem after punching bag, the reason for my bad gym gloves, as my hand was not fully fixed in them. but after changing them and learning many techniques of punching with safety. I feel my wrist much better and strong.

Yes, Jack Dempsey talked about this in his book.

Closing fist on impact gives more explosion to one's shots.
