    Throwing effective body shots

Hello, whenever I am throwing body shots, most of the time I am countered over the top as I am punching downwards. How do I stop this? Should I bend my knees and change levels when I am teeping at the body? Maybe it’s because I stay up straight as I punch down at the body?

    You've answered your own question

I assume it is straight body shots you're talking about, and yeah, in that case it is best to bend at the knees so the punch comes out horizontally, more or less at eye-level, it's basically ducking and punching at the same time

I love throwing a straight right to the body (orthodox v orthodox); you should aim for full extension and try and get some whip on it, but the real key is to time it well. A good simple set up is a flicking high jab, immediately followed by a sharp shot to the body. Quite a good one to practise on the heavy bag. Better is to draw a guy on throwing to your head, and plant one on them as they come in...

Here's a good little video about it

I just assumed this guy was talking about straight shots since he mentioned "punching down", hooks are a different story, even taking one to give one, whereas straight body shots done properly can be delivered quite safely if dropping with the knees properly

          Your advice was good.

Whether throwing straights or hooks to the body it's a good idea to set them up, though.

Learn how to counter to the body. Also, you are probably standing right in front of the other guy and that makes it hard to get away with anything.

Nice one, yeah the setup is vital!

Some guys, they throw big heavy punches on the bags, but they don't put anything in front or after the punch (i.e. setup, and evasion/defence). You just know they're gonna get countered real bad if they keep training lazy like that. As if I'm just gonna stand still in front of you while you load up!
