  • USA Boxing Rules on Sparring

I see mention of sparring in the rules where knockouts (KO, TKO) happen and sparring is restricted. I also see that to spar in a USA Boxing affiliate you must be a USA Boxing member.

Other than that are there restrictions on sparring? How many rounds, on sparring partners, etc? I don't see any.

I ask because a fellow participant told me there was a limit on the number of rounds and other limits on sparring. "Oh, who said?" "It's a USA Boxing rule". I wasn't aware of any so I ignored it. I looked it up at home and could not find anything. I figure he heard someone talking and misunderstood.

    Thoughts? Knowledge? Knock-knock jokes?

There is none that I have ever seen,,, most USA boxing regulations apply to the sanctioned events. However, when you register as a coach you have to take a course on concussion prevention from safesport and there is mention of safe practices regarding training and being a safety minded trainer.
It also implies that you can be held liable if you are found to be negligent in the your practices.
So in a way, it's on the coaches to monitor , but not all coaches are USA boxing registered.
If you put on an event that is not sanctioned by USA boxing (like an exhibition) and you have kids sparing or fighting for the event, you can be dropped by USA boxing and an affiliate.

Thanks for that. Exhibitions is why they chose an affiliate and so far the facility has been careful to follow the rules, hopefully they will continue to do so.

      Thanks for the response.

Gyms can vary quite a bit in terms of their sparring culture. I came from a hard sparring gym even as an amateur we would often spar 5-6 rounds consecutive often with the pro boxers in the gym.
But there were strict rules we 100 percent of the time wore head gear. I really think it’s ****** to not wear it.
If you hurt a guy back off for a bit.
Of course if you were much better than the other guy you take it easy and practice your Defense.

If you are going to a gym
You don’t know to do some sparring be prepared. Bring your own headgear and Vaseline. Be careful when you are in the ring too. If you start boxing up one of their boys they may switch him out with someone looking to do damage.

Update: The rules he was ACTUALLY speaking about was that USA Boxing members cannot spar against those who are NOT members. I'll have to look that up to verify.

I'm going to verify it but I think I read that in the rules. I'll go and look again to make sure.

In Canada if your are not registered with your province you are not allowed to be sparring. We are required a medical fitness examine including blood test yearly to complete. I imagine the rules are the same in the US.
If someone is not registered with boxing USA they probably have not completed the required medical exam. Some gyms skirt these rules and I have heard of bouts being put on outside of a the official amateur. But I don’t think these bouts count on your boxing passport record thing

                    For boxers:
"All participating members; boxers, coaches, officials, ringside doctors, must be
members of USA Boxing, to participate in USA Boxing activities, including but
not limited to club training, sparring sessions, and competitions."

A question is What is a USA Boxing activity?
Our gym says that USA Boxing members can only spar with other members and non-members can spar with each other.
