    Punch Speed is Slow

i have recently been boxing (i am a beginner only been doing for a few months) and used to hit the pads with a ton of power. But the coach taught me to focus on technique mostly and power comes as you bet better with the proper technique. i asked a friend to record me on the pads today and afterwards i was like "that was awesome that felt fast" but when i watched it back it didn't look really slow but it looked much slower than it felt. How can i improve this ?

Depends what is causing you to slow. Could be in the arms, feet, tensing too much, etc. You'd have to have your coach evaluate. You can post it here if you want feedback. Without seeing it, any answers would be wild guesses.

I agree. You should ask your coach for his evaluation. Maybe there are really no problems.

Agreed. Get an outside evaluation. I imagine if I saw myself doing ANYthing on video, I'd think I was doing it poorly. But that's just my self-critical temperament.

And if you've only just started, it's probably OK for things to not be at full speed/strength yet - that's what all the practice is for. Stick with it, and things will certainly improve.

Maybe you were pulling your hands too far back and just focusing on strength? That's usually the first error. Make sure your fist won't go beyond your shoulders and focus more on your body turning.

Ask your coach. Also start using some speed bags and do shadowboxing. You can also use resistance bands to increase your speed as well as doing pushups for explosive speed.

You should focus on your whole body positioning while punching. It may effect your punch speed. So keep focus on keeping your posture right while punching, and try to strengthen your muscles if you feel they are not much stronger.

It is funny tho that while an individual is doing an action like punching, it feels to them like they are very quick, but when they watch back a video, they realize its not that fast. A 5K race I was in a dude passed me and I looked at how fast his feet were moving. I was like wow, his feet and legs aren't moving that fast and I feel like mine are going faster. How is this guy passing me? Although it felt like my feet were moving faster and my stride rate was quicker, it wasn't. I've noticed this skewed perception more than once in my life. Singing is a good example. What I perceive that I sound like when singing is not what the played back recording really sounds like. Video is great tool for boxers to get a look at whats really happening
