  • True or False

I Have been reading various books on boxing workouts and just weight training and body weight training in general. It says in them that you shouldn't train the same muscle two days in a row, even if your doing body weight work or/ ab work its no different. If you do you may not get the result you want and may even LOSE muscle from doing this. But some boxers, (from what I read) seem to contradict this. (Like in Boxings Greatest Workouts some boxers do ab works everyday) It ALSO says that if you do more reps with lighter weight this exusts the muscle but doesn't strengthen it (This also applys to body weight, If you do a push up too easily then raise your feet higher) Some people on this site talk about doing the same exersises everyday.
What is the true deal with all this.

To tell the truth one of those weight training books was weight training for dummies. (Not bad actually, Got some good exersises to incorporate into your workout if you use weights)

It depends on a lot of things, but mainly you have to get your workcapacity up. It sounds like the sources you've been reading are Bodybuilding oriented. Those guys think WAY too much about muscle MASS and WAY too little about any other training parameters.
Olympic weight lifters train as much as 6 hours a day, and they always hit the same muscle groups (because snatch and clean&jerk are fullbody excersises). So, basically it's about building up your work capacity.
Somebody who isn't trained for it can't run 10 miles everyday either, but if you train, you can.
Don't worry about losing muscle as long as you eat enough. The real danger is in getting injured. Always keep your head on your shoulders and leave your ego in the lockerroom.

There is no may they are lifting weights 6 hours a day, without the help of steroids. It would cause them to overtrain, which could lead to injuries etc. The more weight you can do the more rest you need to do aswell.

I could be wrong however, and if I am please explain to me how they could possibly lift weights for 6 hours without over training.

We're talking about the very best lifters here. They have a work capacity that is MUCH higher than you and I. Like I said before, if you tried running 10 miles a day, you'd get yourself overworked and injured pretty quick, but to world class marathon runners, it's easy work.
Also, it's not like they're pumping that barbell continuously. Weight lifters do heavy lifts, multiple sets, but very low reps (3 and below, usually), and with long rests (as long as 5 minutes) between sets. And obviously they don't do it year round. They go through different training cycles, like any educated trainer will do with his athletes.
Whether they're on steroids or not, who knows? That's beside the point though.
The point was, they can do fullbody workouts, hitting every major muscle group, 6-7 days a week. Runners can run every day. Boxers can train every day. It's not like there's some magical rule where the body keeps count, and your muscles disappear because you do 100 pushups everyday.

Wrong. A guy starting out, who squats 100 lbs for 8 reps, needs way more rest than a seasoned weightlifter who can do 400 lbs for 8 reps.
What you're saying would mean that Ricky Hatton would need more rest after one of his workouts, than Joe Couchpotato doing a beginners aerobics class for the first time ever. This is clearly not the case. A beginner needs way more restitution than a seasoned athlete. Why? Because the athlete has built up his work capacity.

Oh, and I ****ing hate it when someone has to pull the "they must be on steroids" accusation out of their ass whenever someone is bigger, stronger or faster than them... Especially when they don't know what the **** they're talking about. Geez!

Don't take study's and what books say seriously.

Every dermatologist and study on skin says that diet doesn't effect acne. But have a can of soda, coffee, choclate, and I'll guarantee that you'll break out. But some don't because everyone's different.

Working out the same muscle 2 days in a row. That's what studies say of course. But I only gain when I work the muscle everyday and that's how my grandfather was and my father.

Everybody is different. Look at Bulgarian weightlifters, they work out the same EXERCISE, not muscle, but same exercise 5-7 hours on a daily basis. You might say that they are world-class and they are, but at some point, they had to build up to it.

I say, do you're workout M-W-F and build it up to 4x a week then onto 5x a week and if you want weekends add those up alter too.

            Just build it up.

yes i truly hate that. Especialy when weight training for strength(which most athletes should do) i.e something like 5x5 so you dont really get all that much size.
then someone sees you lift and how big you are and its an automatic accusation of steroids.

Alright sounds right I guess, But those books weren't based around bodybuilding. A few even inplyed to get a different book if you wanted to bodybuild. And told you about a lot of myths that they mentioned were false.
