  • Southpaw tactics against hookers

Hey there, what are some good tactics for a southpaw against a guy who throws a lot of left hooks? What are good ways to take his left hook away? And what are good examples of fights to watch

Lomachenko does a really good hob at this. But he moves really fast to the to the right which if you dont do fast enough you walk into that left hook. But he does it quick enough to where he ends up on the outside of the opponents left hand so they have to reposition to even catch him with it. Pacquiao does a good job of this by fighting in in in n out style as hes never in range long enough and if he is he is the one throwing combos. I suggest looking how lucas mattthyse fights as well as erislandy lara as its the best of both worlds

Thanks for the reply. You’re right, even tho Loma lost he did a lot of good work against salido. Pacquiao another good example

keep the distance. work with your own right hook or jab (going behind his left leg or pulling yourself immediately out of his range after landing your punch).. be agressive, not to wait for his attacks..

quick steps back if he's attacking and moving at you.. move your body back if he just throws punches but doesn't move his feet.

The main thing is not to stay in opp's range (especially after landing your right).

Don't look at Loma. He's a fake s-paw (as long as Egor Mekhontsev, for example). He's a bad example to watch if you're a true s-paw yourself..

Watching pro-vids is not the best idea. Even guys like Usyk or prime Korobov weren't giving a f about one left hook from the opp in pros and were staying in range doing nothing to protect themselves from it.
Better to watch old am-vids with old counting system when every punch counted.. And they were making miracles in defense..

THanks for the reply but I wouldn’t say kovalev or Jacobs are hookers. What do u think are some tips to take away the opponents left hook all together? Circle to the left as a southpaw? Hold lead hand on opponents left hand?
