That sounds like an "old school" type of thing that has long gone away. Other than long-term hand damage and pain, isn't there another way to get the hands in shape?
Well as a matter of fact i did broke both knuckles some 3 years ago but after that a rough patch covered those knuckles and now i don't feel that pain.
I started it gradually and after getting use to it than let my hands hit it with power but i don't use my whole power because definitely it will cause injury but safe amount of force to strike.

You can do as you please but I think I'd look for another way. Is that worth the potential long-term damage?
No my knuckles are fine but i wouldn't recommend you to do the same just punch the heavy bag bare knuckle and it will condition you fists, if you are in street fight.
