  • So I took up boxing at 54 years of age...

...and no I didn't join a boxing gym even though Vegas has plenty. I'm likely too old for sparring anyway. Just got tired of the health club scene with weights and machines and treadmills and wanted something more activity based.

Been doing this workout in my garage 2 or 3 times a week along with a little swimming, running, biking and calisthenics:

4 three-minute rounds of shadowboxing and 4 for heavy bag work, 3 minute rope skip, 3 sets of dumbbell power cleans, 3 for dumbbell squats, 3 for dumbbell military press, 3 for lateral raises, one minute of dumbbell shadowboxing(very slow, movement, no snapping), 1 set of burpees, stretch.

(Only 1 minute's rest between rounds, sets and exercises.)

I was hoping some people could critique this workout as well as offer some footwork drills since my feet appear to be nailed to the floor when I try to move. Is a speed bag worth the money do you think?

Some say I should join a boxing gym if only to learn some fundamentals but I don't know at my age. I think I'd be too tempted to try and spar and then get my face smashed in.

It all depends on how bad you want it, whatever that is. Find yourself a gym and just get in there and do it, with your doctors ok on it ofcourse. When you spar just find an experienced fighter and ask him for some 'light' work. Being experienced he should be able to just work with you, not beat you up. Drop your sparring partner a few dollars as a sign of appreciation for him helping you. It's always good to show that you appreciate his time and effort with you.....Rockin'

get your heart beating good before you get in there. Maybe ride a stationary bike or just jump rope for 10 or 20 minutes. Prepare your body for what you know will be in your future. Don't go in there 'off the street' and expect your body to be prepared. Get your doctors approval (although he will tell you that boxing is not good for you.) that you are physically able to do this.....Rockin'

Respect at deciding to take up some boxing, gym or not.

Personally I think a speed bag is a worthwhile addition to your gym. And I'd highly recommend getting a double end bag. When I used to train the most fun I had training was on the heavy bag & double end bag. And for me the more fun I had the more energy it gives me making a nice lil symbiotic situation with getting in shape + upping my game quicker.

Good luck pursuing this further whatever you decide to add to your training equipment.

yeah, a speed bag will strengthen your shoulders so that you can keep your hands up while working. Strong shoulders are important in boxing...…...Rockin'

I started boxing at 55 years old and I am still doing it at 57. I joined a boxing gym ran by an ex pro. We had an active pro and 5 previous national champions. I spar in the ring on Thursdays with kids in there 20's and one that's a competitive amateur with about 20 amateur fights. I take class 2 other times a week. You need to join a boxing gym because there is a lot more to it than you think. I just pay for 6 months then take 6 months off. I am in the best shape of my life now.

You need to post some videos of teaching those youngins a lesson in the ring.

You know when I took my initial 6 month sign up I didn't really know what I was getting into and never dreamed I will still be doing it. It was hard at first but now I enjoy it as I now have a good understanding of things. My trainer wants me to fight amateur in the Masters division. I am going to do that next year. This year I had to many injuries starting with my wrist, then my forearm, then my ribs. Not to mention my nose is sore from a flush cross I received on 6/7 (I bled out pretty bad). The latest injury is from baseball, a pulled Hamstring. I have 3 weeks left of boxing and at least 3 weeks of baseball. Then I rest for 6 months from both as it takes me that long to heal. I am going to try to have someone tape my next sparring event and see if I can post it on this forum.

                    Join the Boxing gym asap.

Huge misconception that people in boxing gyms are killer.

                    50% are obese.
30% are under 16 and are as weak AF.
10% are there just to gossip and chat.
9% thought it was a training course on how to assemble a box.

1% are good. Avoid them when sparring.
