    Round 1

    Round 2

Here are 2 short videos from some recent sparring. I'm in the white headgear. Apologies for the cameraman who missed the action a few times. Also the 2nd video cuts out because my phone didn't have enough memory.

Please give any advice you can, and be as harsh as you like.

This was my first sparring in almost 6 months- last time was against the same guy, and I was sloppy and overconfident and got hit with a big left hook on my chin which I didn't even see coming. So I thought I'd better take a break.

This time I wanted to focus on defense and movement. I've learnt a lot of things since last time but putting it into practice is difficult. My mind kind of went blank, but I'm happy that a few of the things I tried out went well.

    Good points:
    1. Movement and keeping distance against an aggressive fighter (although he doesn't seem to know how to cut off the ring). I got hit a few times but no big shots like last time.
    2. For the first time I was able to mix up the direction of my movement - not just circling to the left but to the right too.
    3. I tried throwing some sudden straight rights, which seemed to work well. I got him good at 0:38 on the 2nd video- did I almost drop him or was he just off-balance? Afterwards he told me my attacks were predictable, and that even though I had power on the straight right, I never followed it up with anything.
    4. A few times I tried to turn him and hit him on his blind side, like at 1:44 on the 1st video. But turning the opponent seemed very difficult.

    Bad points -

    1. Poor footwork, flat-footed, lack of head movement, as usual.
    2. Lazy jabs. Also I didn't jab as much as I should have, and didn't utilize the lead hand as much as I could have. Didn't feint so much.
    3. For some reason I kept dropping my left hand whenever I threw the straight right (unconsciously imitating Mayweather?! Although I suppose he has his left hand low anyway).
    4. I didn't attack enough and he probably got the better of me overall.
    5. Poor technique on the straight right - not twisting my foot and hips correctly.
    6. Forgot to control after missing punches, although I haven't practiced this yet

    Anything else?

One question- I've noticed after throwing the 1-2, I follow up with a jab, like a 1-2-3. It's because I feel exposed after the straight right. I suppose it works well for defense but I was wondering if there's a better idea.

    Thanks!

I watch the second video. Some decent counters, but I felt that you were leaving yourself open by throwing a lazy jab.

Every time you throw that right you are dropping your left hand. Its going to be super easy to slip that to the right and then unload on your chin. You're also hurting your power and speed when you drop the left hand as it hurts your chain of momentum.

It looks like his moving forward style is making you feel pressured. You aren't generally going to win amateur rds if you are moving backward the whole fight unless you are winning the majority of the exchanges.

Remember its okay to get hit you just have to guard. Try to stop moving backwards, let him hit you in your high guard a few times and then throw a combo. Looks pretty good when throwing 2-3 punches but keep that left hand by your chin when throwing your right.

I like your fighting spirit and how you handled the end of the 2nd video, stay after it amigo. That guy could be really hurt by a short left hook or left uppercut after a quick step back when he comes in barging, but really, I like how you fought him. good work. You didn't run too much, and when the end came you put some hurt on him.

I missed that you touched on dropping your hand. I thought your footwork looked much better btw!

You did get him pretty good at :38 in the second video as well. I think you just caught him flat footed and gave him a good shot. You had a nice move at the end of the round where you slipped his jab and came back with your own.

When on the ropes/in the corner try to start the movement in your direction with a duck/dip.

Should have jumped on after that shot. The legs shook on that one.

First and primary impression; you're playing a submissive role. Don't let a guy just walk you down like that. He's being lazy because you aren't giving him no reason to respect you. Instead of waiting until you get your back at the ropes, JAB. Thrust off that back foot and drive that jab into his face periodically and watch how his behavior changes. Switch it up by using an assertive body jab here and there. He's hella open for both those.

He knows you're just going to back up when he moves forward. Change that. Use his forward momentum against him.

Agreed. He's wide open for those all night.

He pushed you around quite a bit, where you still worried about getting caught by him again? You landed some nice ones though.I'm an old wash up at 37,had a heart attack due to genetics but training my 14 yr old daughter and 18 year old son.But you seemed slightly hesitant to attack the body which he had open.Agree with everyone that one shot caught him, that was your time to kill, his legs looked light. And like always more jabs, more jabs and keep the left up when you throw a right. But still looked good and your putting in work, that's all that matters, boxing is repetition, repetition.Keep up the good work, man!
