Looking to start doing some basic MMA and boxing training. I understand this is primarily a boxing board, so my apologies if the mention of MMA is not allowed or irritates anyone. I am hoping someone experienced can recommend a few gear items and training resources. The rest of this post will outline my needs and questions.
I know nothing about MMA or boxing and want to start learning the basics. I want to develop basic hand and footwork skills and build up coordination and quickness.
I am moving to a remote Caribbean outer island. If I don't bring it, I won't have it. What I bring must be portable. If I bring a heavy bag, it must be something I can fill there with sand or water after arriving, not a pre-filled bag, etc. I will be alone and not have training partner. I know this is not ideal, but it is my situation.
I need to determine what gear to bring.
I would guess my focus should be just learning punching, speedbag, and other basic hand-eye and body coordination movements. But I don't know.
I don't have tons of indoor space to build a gym, but I could find a place to mount a speedbag and hang a heavy bag from a tree.
I'll be swimming, spearfishing, etc., but want to, over the course of year, do boxing work 2-4 times a week to just develop proficiency in the basics. At least throw a strong punch properly, some improved hand speed, etc. I have no illusions I'll be a tough guy training alone just a few times a week, but that doesn't mean I can't improve.
I am 6'4" tall.
Questions:
1. What should my gear list be? What do I need? Heavy bag? Wraps? Gloves? Speed bag? If I'm there a year with no ability to replenish supplies, do I need extra wraps or gloves? Is there a good heavy bag that comes unfilled?
One thing that confuses me a bit is MMA gloves vs. Boxing. I don't know enough to know what I want to learn, and am not even sure I need gloves for basic bag work? Wraps alone?
2. Brands/materials? I have seen many cheap gloves get torn up, but don't understand the difference between a cheap and good one. Or bags. Could someone tell me a few specific products and brands that would work? I know nothing about this, so exact product names or links would be helpful. In particular, want good gloves that will last, not cheapies that will be worn out in three weeks, but I'm not rich. Is there a good brand that is also inexpensive? Or if looking used on Craigslist, what are good brands types?
3. Are there any good resources for teaching the basics, ideally with training routines one could follow? Again, I realize a live, in-person human trainer or training partner would be ideal, but I don't have one, and must do the best I can with what I have.
4. A secondary desire might be to learn some basic kicks or lower body, kick the heavy bag, etc. I have no illusions of becoming Mr. Ground n Pound alone with no trainer starting from scratch, but also wouldn't mind a balanced full body approach.
Again, pardon my extreme ignorance. I would be SUPER grateful if anyone could provide assistance. I leave in 16 days and after that have no access to modern shopping besides food and basic hardware supplies for one year. Love to come off the island with greatly improved hand-eye coordination and mastery of at least basic punching and kicking.
