A lot of kids used to come to my old gym, which was run by an old Irish dude.
Kids were like 9 or 10. They were socializing and messing around during the rounds instead of doing their workouts.
Old coach gave 'em a good hollering. Most of the kids who went into that gym didn't last.
Obviously different from the situation you describe, but the ones who don't respect the sport won't last.

I got one. I was working mitts one day. A group of 4 or 5 young men, late teens, came into the gym and started asking our coach some questions.
Now I didn't hear the conversation that took place, but next thing you know, coach started swearing up a storm at these kids. Told them to GTFO real loud. I think he called them ****ing poles or something. I stopped in the middle of the round of mitts to see what the commotion was all about.
I know a lot of 'tough guys' come into gyms asking to spar cuz they think they're badasses and want to be tough. Those guys seemed to fit that bill. One of the guys at the gym wanted to invite them in to spar and whale on them for disrespecting coach. I told him, "thats not what we're about, we don't beat people up like that."
And he said, "**** that, coach, let me have 'em!"
Maybe he had a point. Some people need a good ass whoopin'.
As far as I know, those kids never came back.

My old coach, rest his soul, would have called that kid over who laughed if he heard him and asked him if he thought boxing was funny. He would have scared the **** out of him and then put him in with someone right then and there. The whole time he’s getting “whipped controllably” he’d of been asking him how funny is boxing now?

Well, the other guys heard it, and they told the best guy in the gym about it. So the next day, the star guy at the gym sets it up with coach that he wants to spar me. I didn't know what I was getting myself into.
It started slow and he let me throw the first punches, and after that, he just unloads everything on me. For a full round. It was like I couldn't breathe in there. My back up against the ropes the whole time. I was pissed off. Cuz that was my 3rd time sparring and I was of the impression that I would be starting off slow and building up. So I was telling everyone **** this and **** that guy what the hell is his problem I've been here for 1 month! I was more embarrassed than anything. That was the worst beating I've ever received in my life. It was a hard pill to swallow.
Well they told the guy what I was saying, and he had to set me straight, telling me that we don't talk **** around here. I was choaking up and said, "why did you bear me up like that?"
His answer was simple, "cuz that's what it's about."
I wasn't planning on coming back, but he said, "I want you to come back."

But I said something out loud, not directed towards anyone, but just kind of to myself more than anything, almost like giving myself a pep talk. One day after sparring, I said outloud to myself, "Okay, that wasn't too bad. I guess I'm pretty good at this sport."

How do you tag that Chollo guy on this story? It probably won't help him, but he needs to know what happens in real boxing gyms.

Sometimes posters just kind of blend together for me.

Then he started to talk about how he’s not a beginner, but he’s not a pro fighter, because he hasn’t had any “pro matches”.. but far from a rookie.
Then I told him how he’s never even had a single sanctioned fight period, so he’s not even a fighter or a beginner, he’s not anything yet. And this irritate him and he started to talk about how many street fights he’s been in and kept asking for my credentials. I just told him to go down to a local gym, pay the $65 for a USA Boxing membership and train. You’ll know real quick if you want to be a fighter or not.
But you know how people like that are. That’s why I wanted him to hear your story.Last edited by Lomadeaux; 02-11-2018, 09:42 PM.
