  • First Contact Sparring Session

First real session, somewhat typical outcome.

I read on here about people's first sparring partner and how when the action starts, everything goes out the window. And yes, that's exactly what happened. My camera fell over else I'd show you but I can honestly say it was not good boxing. I think it was necessary to go through that (for me) but I am personally very disappointed.

My boxing coach and others were there and they said it wasn't as bad as I thought, and that it's all part of the process and on and on and I appreciate their knowledge and thanked them, and my sparring partners, for the work. However, I know it needs mucho grande work.

If I would have just brawled things would have been better, but that's not the point, is it? I tried to box, and it felt awkward. I'm sure I held my breath as I got VERY winded, to the point where I was very happy when it was over because I would have soon become a very easy target.

I wish I could have gotten the video. Damn it.

You're fine, just keep getting in there and gaining more experience, sticking to the basics. It's your first time, you're not going to go in there and look like Mayweather or Duran so stop dwelling over it. You're gonna get schooled and even whooped early on, it happens to everybody. Just make sure you're in shape and they aren't making you spar somebody who isn't going to work with you and is levels above. Listen to your coaches and keep your guard up at all times, and as they say, when in doubt throw the jab.

Thanks, I appreciate it. The first guy was involved in their last fight night and I eased up on him else I would have jabbed his brains out. The second guy has been doing it for a while and has been working on it for a few years. He's younger faster and in shape. He's also a great guy and gives me pointers when we workout. I think he took it easy on me here and there as I could see him coming in and working on his defense. If he really wanted to he could have done some damage, I think.

Again I know it's part of the deal, but I felt totally lost.

It also gives me an indication of my level of fitness. Given my calf/leg injury and the fact I'm coming back from that, I know I have to do everything I can to increase that aspect.

Just be sure that you show up tomorrow to do it all again. Your cherries been popped and you felt the dopamine flowing through your veins and you liked it, you know you did. Train hard and fight even harder. Cong****........Rockin'

Thanks! And yes, I'm going back. If, because of making sure the wife is happy and we paint a room, I don't get to go to the gym tomorrow it will be shadowboxing and the beginning of running.

I've not been able to run until now, and tomorrow I'll go for a very slow one mile regardless of being able to make it to the gym or not. VEERRRRYYYYYY slow.

I also ordered my own headgear about 30 minutes ago.

Keep at it mate. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.

As long as you enjoy it and practice, you'll improve

I didn't like the feeling of incompetence, but I do like the work I put in and getting in the ring. If I progress, that's good. If, in 10 weeks, I'm still just as incompetent, I'll have to take up competitive yarn rolling.

Thanks! Progress is all I can ask for, and hopefully in whatever increment I deserve versus the work put in.
