  • Knuckle pain lead hook

    Hi all,

For the last year I have been struggling with pain around my knuckles in my right hand(I am a southpaw). A few other threads mentioned people with the same kind of feeling in the knuckle as if there were some fluid and inflammation. After a long time of rest it goes away, but as soon as I go back to training it comes back at the moment I have to throw hooks and uppercuts.

I tried several wrapping techniques - in between fingers in a few ways, not in between fingers, extra pad on top of knuckle and then in between fingers, you name it. I have 400cm+ stretch cotton wraps. I went to see a hand specialist in a boxing shop, who pulled and twisted my fingers and the pain went away for a few days. He insisted not to wrap in between the fingers. Is it possible that my gloves are too small (16oz Adidas Super pro gloves).
I also bought the NG-2 knuckle pad from Winning, but as soon as I put them on in my gloves it starts to hurt.

Long story short, me and my instructor do not really know where this problem originates itself, help appreciated!

    Kind regards

Does it occur on the heavy bag, pads, sparring?
What technique are you using in regards to the fist making contact? Is your "palm down" on contact, pronating? Or is your pinkie finger pointing to the floor?
There are many different ways to use wraps and employ padding for injuries. I can't help you with that other than to tell you to search for a veteran trainer who has that experience.
    Whats a "boxing shop"?

Have you had a doctor take a look? Possible minor fracture?

        Thanks for your replies!

@Ray, Does it occur on the heavy bag, pads, sparring?
It does not really matter what kind of training, when hitting on the heavy bag it occurs a bit quicker than when hitting on training partners' gloves or pads.

@Ray, What technique are you using in regards to the fist making contact? Is your "palm down" on contact, pronating?
I throw my hooks without pronation, so pinky towards the floor. I have no troubles with this hook throwing technique in my other hand, by the way. I also try to clench my fist just before impact.

@Ray, What is a boxing shop?
What I meant to say is a specialist store on martial arts, mostly boxing. They have this guy over there that is one of the few Dutch specialists on hand injury diagnosis from fighting and hand wrapping etc.

@OctoberRed, Have you had a doctor take a look? Possible minor fracture?
Yes I have, she said that it was highly unlikely after a brief examination, and my physical therapist says the same, a mild bruise is what he guessed at. It also seems to me that since I had it on both my index and middle finger knuckle not simultaneously it is no fracture.

        Thanks for your replies!

I would try some extra wrapping to protect it, to see if that helps.

              1. 190cm/89kg or 6.2" 196lbs
              2. 23
              3. Medium or medium small sized hands I guess. Big palms short fingers.

When using a pad, you'll need to try wrapping looser than usual. Try that.

Also, try getting the pad in the middle of your wrap. Start with 3x around the wrist, move up to knuckles, get 1-2 revolutions around the pad, then in between each finger (know what I mean?), then finish off on the knuckles. Make sure the wrap is looser than normal.

Lastly, dont wrap your thumb, just put the loop on your thumb then go to the wrist.

I had similar problems when a pro from my gym gave me a pair of pads. There was a learning curve to getting wrapped right.

Try a different brand wrap. I don't like the idea of someone using Adidas for Boxing wraps. Ringside or Reyes. Mexican style.

                Try these: https://www.ringside.com/ringside-me...aps-180-2.html

You don't want the wraps that turn hard (cotton?). Try the stretchy ones that are 180"-200" for your build, 450cm is too short. You need more wrap for pads.

                Try that and report back.

                  Thanks a lot!

I just bought a pair of the wraps you recommended and will see tomorrow at practice if your advice works out.

Secondly, does it have something to do with the way I throw my hooks? Palm down or perpendicular to the floor?

And last but not least, is it possible that it has something to do with my gloves? I get the feeling they play a significant part in this as well... With the holidays coming up I might consider changing gloves.

                  I will keep you updated!
