Are there any effective drills people know of for improving hand speed?

One of the things I learned when I was doing actual instructor led workouts were "30 second drills" where you'd just throw 1-2s at the heavy bag, maintaining good form, as fast as you could for 30 seconds, then rest for 30, go for 30, rest for 30, etc. That one seemed to be awesome conditioning and seemed like it was a good hand speed one too.

I hope others chime in with ideas but here's an offbeat thing you can try:

Michael Olajide has a workout dvd called Aerobox Round One.

As part of the workout he has you throw combinations that build on top of each other. At the end he has you stringing them all together non-stop at full speed.

It's a decent mental test to remember all the punches and it also gives a good boost to your handspeed. In my opinion.

Hmmm I like the sound of that, seems like it would be a good drill.

Thanks, that definitely sounds like a helpful drill/workout.

Why not just do it the normal way and wear heavier gloves on the bag and all that, and shadow box with small weights in your hand?
