  • Heavy bag feedback

    I posted a heavy bag video around a week ago and received some nice tips, since then I've tried to work on them. Here is an updated video below, just excuse the frequent pauses... It was at the very end of the session, so i was tired and also having issues with my contact lenses.

    Tips appreciated.

    I got distracted when that big buffalo in yellow walked by...LOL

    Good form, seemed to smother a few punches in close. Could turn the body a bit more and step in for added power depending on what you'r looking to try.

      getting better, chin still a little too high for my liking, also when you look to attack and slip to the left to through your lead hook your chin comes up

      all in all ok

        Good overall but if you want feedback, here's some ideas;
        -Spend some time going through everything at half-speed. You've got a lot of small flaws in technique that often come from trying to blend everything together at full speed. Slowing it down lets you focus on things like pulling the hands back to guard quickly, full defensive movements (and not just half a roll or slip), and particularly balance.

        -At times, you're loading up on the front leg to a degree and your rear leg is stretched out really far behind you. This robs you of power because you can't thrust off a leg that is already extended. Bring it in a bit and watch the power on your straight punches go up because now you can explode off that rear leg. Load on the front leg for hooks only.
        Mikey Garcia is a textbook example of excellent weight distribution and footwork.

        -Tighten up your right hand. It's occasionally being telegraphed, or lingers out there too long before coming back to guard. Also, don't smother it. Work on keeping the bag at the end of your range.

        -The frequent pauses. You seem distracted. Pauses create problems, whether you plan to compete or are just looking for a cardio workout. Stay focused while you're on the bag and take incremental breaks. You don't have to be punching the whole time but if you aren't punching, you are moving with your guard up.

        Here's some Mikey Garcia for you;

            You still have the habit of crossing your feet when you step to your right. It has improved from before though. your guard is still too low especially when you're throwing combos your guard virtually disappears. You still wind up a bit too much on your punches. Focus on your form and making sure your elbows don't flare out and you return your fists to your guard before throwing another punch. You're moving your head a bit more but it's a bit too robotic, use your knees more and become more proficient in shifting your weight and turning your shoulders. You're ability to manage distance in reference to the bag is better but I'd like to see more lateral movement and changing angles on the inside.(you did it fairly well at the end) Don't be afraid to work on your inside game you tend to come in for one or two shots then stay out of range of the bag. I'd like to see you change levels more as well, really bend your knees when you bob.

              I'll keep working on tucking in that chin until it becomes muscle memory. Cheers Richard.

                That's great!
                Ive noticed myself that some of my movements are slightly robotic, need more of a flow to them. I'll take it all into account and work on it.

                Cheers!

                  Thanks for the tips, I appreciate it.

                  I tried the different balance of weight between my legs yesterday as you said. So far successfully, although I do find myself slipping back to as you said "loading up on my front leg" occassionally, especially when throwing the straight right. I'm sure that'll fizzle out eventually with repetition.

                  As for the frequent pauses, as I said this usually isn't an issue. You'll find my blinking and rubbing my eyes quite often in the video because of having issues with my contact lenses...which generally doesn't happen! Most probably not the best video to showcase but it was the only one I took!

                  Thanks again.
