New boxer needing equipment advice?

Hi guys,

Had my first lesson the other week and decided to start getting myself some basic bits..

Just bought myself a rope so I can learn in my own time without looking a wally in front of everyone each week and some Rival boots as well.

I'm thinking about some gloves? I'm from the UK and want as good a pair of gloves as I can get for around £50ish. Just something that will see me right for the time being.

If you guys could recommend anything else to buy that would be great.

You need 16 ounce Training/Sparring Gloves, 16 ounce the the most common used in gyms. Your hand size will determine if you need s, m, l or xl. Only buy leather, I can thoroughly trash cheap imitation leather or vinyl gloves in less than a month; not to mention sore hands. I don't know what is available in the UK but stay away from cheap Everlast, at your price point you may not have many choices, cut corners somewhere else but not on gloves that protect your hands. I use Ringside here in USA, Title is a fair price/quality Training glove. Winning gloves are way overpriced, much better off with Cletos Reyes at the upper end of the price range. I don't know about RDX and of course Rival makes a good glove. Again leather only, good fit with hands wrapped, good construction and wipe them lightly ever couple of months with leather conditioner.

Footware is your best investment as a beginner, and if you have decent boxing boots it will help support your ankle and the balls of your feet with all that rotation.

To be brutely honest £50 isnt ideal as the material will be synthetic leather, which is a bit nasty.

however you can find some good Sandee Two Tone if you look hard enough at that price (2015 or 2016 designs) and the entry level Ringside Club Training gloves are good at that price

If you can stretch to £100 look into Ringside Super Pro series, a fantastic glove, half the price of a Cleyto but in my opinion only fractionally behind it in performance

Finally Yokkao gloves are very very good for the money which may set you back a little more at £60

Yokkao and Sandee are traditionally Muay Thai brands and the gloves may not be quite as slender as a boxing glove but very decent brands and if £50 is your limit, consider these

I agree if you can get the Ringside Super Pro Gel gloves in the UK go that route.

Yeah ringside are available in UK, not huge margins on them so retailers don't often stock them, but with a bit of 'googling' you can find retailers

Agreed winning is top dog, nothing compares but the guy has had 1 boxing lesson.

Unless your dad is called sheikh or is an investment banker in Switzerland I would not spend 300 odd pounds on equipment that you may end up sticking in the back of a wardrobe in 3 months time.

Imo 16s are way too big. Especially for a beginner. Someone just starting out needs to take the time to make their hands accustomed to punching and absorbing the force of a punch.
